Power Factor — Kya Hota Hai?

Bhai, Gulf ki kisi bhi industrial site pe — Qatar University ho ya Sidra Hospital — KAHRAMAA/DEWA ka inspector pehla sawaal yahi karta hai: “Tumhara power factor kya hai?” Agar 0.85 se neeche gaya to penalty. Simple.

Power factor ek ratio hai — actual kaam karne wali power (kW) aur total power consumed (kVA) ke beech. Jaise ek lazy worker jo boss ke saamne busy dikhta hai but kaam kam karta hai — high kVA, low kW, low PF.

Power Triangle

Teen powers hain jo ek right triangle banate hain:

kVA² = kW² + kVAR²
PF = kW ÷ kVA = cos(θ)
kVAR = kW × tan(θ)
Angle θ = cos&supmin;¹(PF)

Gulf Sites pe PF kyun important hai?

KAHRAMAA Qatar mein 0.90 lagging se neeche penalty charge hoti hai. UAE mein DEWA bhi 0.85 minimum rakhta hai. Sidra Hospital jaise bade projects mein PF monitoring continuous hoti hai. DB PPM guide mein power quality checks mention hain.

PF Improve Kaise Karein

Capacitor bank lagao — yeh lagging reactive power ko cancel karta hai. Formula:

Q_cap (kVAR) = kW × [tan(θ1) — tan(θ2)]
Where θ1 = existing PF angle, θ2 = target PF angle
Gulf Site Example

Given: 100 kW load, existing PF = 0.75, target = 0.95

kVA_existing = 100 ÷ 0.75 = 133.3 kVA

kVAR_existing = √(133.3² — 100²) = 88.2 kVAR

kVAR_target = 100 × tan(cos&supmin;¹0.95) = 32.9 kVAR

Capacitor needed = 88.2 — 32.9 = 55.3 kVAR

PF Chart — Good/Bad/Penalty

PF Range Status Gulf Action
0.95 — 1.0 Excellent No penalty, rebate possible
0.90 — 0.94 Good Acceptable (KAHRAMAA limit)
0.85 — 0.89 Average Warning zone (DEWA limit)
Below 0.85 Poor Penalty charge laga denge
⚠ Motors aur transformers sabse bada PF problem hain. Unloaded motor full kVAR consume karta hai with almost zero kW. VFD lagao — PF automatically improve hoti hai. Star-Delta starting se bhi starting pe PF better rehta hai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bhai, PF = kW ÷ kVA hai. kW kabhi kVA se zyada nahi ho sakta kyunki kVA mein kW aur kVAR dono include hain. Purely resistive load (heater, bulb) mein PF = 1.0 hota hai — koi reactive component nahi. Motors, transformers always inductive hote hain isliye PF hamesha 1 se kam rehta hai.

Lagging PF: inductive load (motors, transformers) — current voltage ke peeche rehti hai. Yeh Gulf sites ka common problem hai. Leading PF: capacitive load (capacitor banks, long underground cables) — current voltage se aage rehti hai. Over-correction bhi problem hai — isliye calculator mein target 0.95 rakha hai, 1.0 nahi.

KAHRAMAA aur DEWA billing kVA mein hoti hai, sirf kW mein nahi. Jab PF improve hoti hai, same kW ke liye kVA kam ho jaata hai. Example: 100kW load, PF 0.75 se 0.95 pe — kVA 133 se 105 ho jaata hai. 28 kVA ki billing bachti hai monthly. Bade factories mein yeh lakhs mein hoti hai.

Common questions: kVA aur kW mein farak, capacitor bank sizing ka formula, APFC relay kya hoti hai, power triangle explain karo, lagging vs leading PF. Gulf interview complete guide mein in sabka jawab detail mein hai.

Manual capacitor bank: fixed size, hamesha connected, light loads pe over-correction ho sakti hai. APFC (Automatic Power Factor Correction): PF relay load ke hisaab se capacitor steps automatically switch karta hai. Gulf ki badi sites pe APFC mandatory hoti hai. DB PPM mein capacitor bank maintenance bhi include hoti hai.
